About Zagreb

Zagreb, the capital and largest city of Croatia, is one of the oldest towns in Central Europe. The earliest recorded mention of the name “Zagreb” dates back to the year 1134, highlighting its long and storied past. According to local legend, the city’s name originates from an event in the 14th century when a great military leader and his exhausted, thirsty army stopped in the region. In search of water, the leader struck his sword into the parched ground, and a spring emerged. Nearby was a beautiful young woman named Manda, and the leader called to her: “Manda, my dear, scoop up some water!”—with the word zagrabiti (to scoop) believed to be the root of the name Zagreb. The spring later became known as Manduševac, and today it remains a notable landmark in the city’s central Ban Jelačić Square, where the famous statue of Ban Josip Jelačić proudly stands.

The city’s Upper Town (Gornji grad) is a living museum, where every cobblestone and building tells a story from centuries past. Rich in heritage and tradition, this area is also home to numerous legends and historical landmarks, including the iconic St. Mark’s Church and the medieval Lotrščak Tower.

Zagreb is also recognized as one of Europe’s greenest cities, offering a blend of urban charm and natural beauty. It features countless hidden parks and green spaces, including the Botanical Garden, established in the 19th century, located in the very heart of the city.

The city also delights the senses with its diverse culinary scene, representing all regions of Croatia. Visitors can enjoy a rich variety of traditional dishes alongside high-quality Croatian wines, making Zagreb a true gastronomic crossroads.
